10 Ways You Can Boost Your Immune System This Flu Season

Flu season is here – the virus typically peaks between late fall and early winter. The change in weather, coupled with more time spent indoors, creates an ideal environment for the virus to spread.

To help you and your family stay healthy, Dr. Ayvazian and the Rapid Response Urgent Care team have a list of tips and strategies to boost your immune system and reduce your risk of catching the flu.

1. Get the flu vaccine

When it comes to fighting off the flu, nothing beats the flu shot. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the flu vaccine decreases the risk of flu cases by 40% to 60% during seasons when the vaccine closely matches circulating flu viruses.

2. Eat well

Eating lots of fruits, vegetables, lean proteins, and whole grains gives your immune system a much-needed shot in the arm. Citrus fruits, nuts, and seeds are also helpful because they contain plenty of immune-boosting vitamins C and E.

3. Drink (and eat) lots of water

Hydration is key for a strong immune system because water transports nutrients to your cells and flushes out toxins. Aim for at least eight glasses of water a day. You can eat your water, too, by noshing on watermelon, strawberries, and cantaloupe, to name just a few hydrating foods

Rapid Response Urgent Care is also proud to offer IV therapy, which is a highly effective way of rehydrating you, replacing nutrients, and strengthening your immune system.

4. Get plenty of sleep

Studies show that people who don’t get enough sleep are more likely to get sick after exposure to a virus. Aim for 7-9 hours of sleep per night.

5. Move your body more

Exercise is excellent for your health and your immune system. The American Heart Association recommends at least 150 minutes of moderate aerobic activity or 75 minutes of vigorous activity each week.

6. Manage stress

Chronic stress weakens your immune system and makes you more susceptible to illnesses. Avoiding stressful situations and managing those you can’t sidestep can protect your immune system.

7. Keep it clean

Wash your hands often, using soap and water. Keep lathering for about 20 seconds to ensure you kill all the germs on the surface of your hands, and try not to touch your eyes, nose, and mouth.

8. Take immune-boosting supplements

Vitamin D, zinc, and probiotics can support your immune system, but discuss taking these supplements with our team first to ensure they don’t interfere with your other medications.

9. Stay socially connected

Social interactions, even virtual ones, can boost your immune system. Research has shown that loneliness can negatively affect immune function, so stay connected with friends and family.

10. Cut back on alcohol and nicotine

Smoking and excessive alcohol consumption damage your immune system. Curbing your nicotine and alcohol habits can go a long way in helping you fight off infections.
