What happens during a physical?

Your provider starts by taking your vital signs: weight, height, blood pressure, temperature, and pulse rate. Next, they take a medical history, which includes any problems you have, the medications you take, your lifestyle habits, your family history of disease, and any symptoms you’ve developed.

Next, they perform a physical exam. They test your sight and hearing and examine your body for visible signs of illness or injury. They also do blood work, making sure your blood count, blood chemistry, cholesterol levels, and any other markers are normal. If they see a problem, they can flag it for follow-up treatment.

Sports physical

If you’re having a sports physical, your provider makes sure that you’re physically able to fully engage in your sport without injuring yourself. They may also provide training tips to help you avoid injuries while you’re playing. If you have a condition like asthma, they can adjust your medication so you can breathe more easily during exertion.
